Nile Exploration Private Adventure
Please feel free to contact our Egypt Destination Manager (info@boundlessjourneys.com; 1-800-941-8010) if you have any questions about the current travel situation in Egypt.
Egypt's spectacular historical treasures are rife with myth, legend, and mystery. From the pyramids of the Old Kingdom, the last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, to the temples of the New Kingdom, at turns imposing and utterly graceful, the lives of the pharaohs still seem very real when walking amid millenia's worth of ancient sites. Yet the sites are so massive, so complex, it seems impossible that they could have been built by mere mortals.
On your Private Collection adventure, you'll explore these pharaonic antiquities, from the great pyramids of Giza, to the Valley of the Kings, to the temples lining the banks of the Nile River with expert Egyptologist guides, who will slowly lift the veil, resolving mysteries and decoding hieroglyphics, and enlightening you to the daily lives of people who lived here long ago.
You'll also absorb modern life in this complicated country – a place where the old and the new strive day by day to find a way forward. Evenings will find you in some of the finest accommodations in the very best locations in Cairo, and afternoons are spent drifting along the Nile in our luxurious small ship, watching miles of sun-baked desert and palm-filled shoreline slip by, while children tending their cattle stop to play in our wake.

Other activities, such as snorkeling or sea kayaking, are optional. Examples: Indochina, Vietnam, Egypt, Galapagos Islands, Botswana, Tanzania.
EASY TO MODERATE 2
Hotel nights and/or deluxe, safari-style camping. Walking, hiking (approximately 3 to 5 hours), kayaking, or other activities on most days. Trails and paths are through rolling countryside, with occasional steep trails with up to 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Many of our hotel-based walking trips are in this category. Examples: Tuscany & Umbria, Sicily, Morocco, Palau, Iceland, Turkey, Festivals of Bhutan, Costa Rica.
MODERATE 3
Full day hikes (approximately 4 to 6 hours) most days on unpaved trails and paths through hilly terrain with typical elevation gains and losses of 1,000 to 2,000 feet. There may be occasional short steep sections of trail. Examples: Chile, Scotland, Spain, Bhutan & Nepal.

Examples: Tour du Mont Blanc, Peru Trek, Bhutan Chomolhari Trek..
MOST STRENUOUS 5
Full-day trekking (approximately 6 to 8 hours) through rugged mountainous terrain with steep climbs and descents and one or more of the following present: elevation gains and losses of as much as 4,000 feet, altitude that exceeds 12,000 feet, and rugged uneven footpaths. WHAT TO EXPECT
Trip Rating
Boundless Journeys’ trips are designed for energetic and flexible individuals who like to be active and have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. Nile Exploration is rated 1+, easy, on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the most strenuous). The walking tours on this trip average 3-4 hours a day at a very leisurely pace, on mostly flat ground. At the ancient sites, footing can be uneven and you will encounter some stairs.
Preparing for this Trip
It is important that you realistically assess your physical condition with regard to the demands of this trip. Although the activities on this trip are easy, some agility is required for moving around the boat, as well as at the sites. The more well-prepared you are for the walking on this trip, the more you will enjoy yourself! Please do some walking several times a week for several weeks before the trip. As always, consult your doctor before undertaking any new fitness programs.
Our Luxury Boats
The Nile Adventurer and other boats we use for the cruise portion of our itineraries are the best on the Nile. A full range of services, from massage to wireless internet access, are available. Our high crew-to-guest ratio (nearly 1:1) ensures an extremely high quality of service throughout your cruise. Our boats also have fewer cabins than many other high-end boats, allowing for a more intimate travel experience while still offering the amenities expected of a deluxe cruise experience, such as heated swimming pools, well-appointed indoor and outdoor spaces, comfortable cabins, and a small gym. Each cabin has individual climate control which is essential for your comfort.
Also of great importance when traveling in Egypt is the quality of food preparation. The kitchens on our boats are overseen by an independent British company that audits on-board food handling methods on an ongoing basis, ensuring that you can enjoy the food presented on board with a greatly reduced risk of illness.
The Nile Cruise Experience
Choosing to cruise along the Nile rather than touring the sites between Luxor and Aswan by land allows you to spend the time when you are not visiting sites truly relaxing as we drift by the shoreline. We believe cruising offers a more complete experience, where your ship is an oasis from the busy streets in our ports of call, yet still allows you to take in daily life along the river. There will be times during your cruise when you will pass by developed areas, and when you will see other ships along the river, but our unique schedule also ensures that you will have ample time when ours is the only boat you'll see on the river, except perhaps for a local felucca, and the riverbanks seem untouched by the passage of time.
Generally speaking, there will be morning and afternoon excursions from the boat, and these are outlined in the daily itinerary. While you will have a private guide for touring in Cairo, we generally suggest one of the boat Egyptologists, who will lead a group of up to 12 guests to each site. Of course, if you prefer, you may request a private Egyptologist for your cruise at additional expense, which allows you a bit of flexibility to do some shopping, and add to or modify the sites visited. During the times when we are cruising, you may choose to enjoy the swimming pool on the upper deck, relax in one of the lounges, borrow books of local interest from the ship's library, or chat with the boat manager and crew about life along the Nile.
Our boats also enjoy private dockage at both Luxor and Aswan, so that unlike when you travel with many other tour companies, you will not have to walk through the reception areas of 6-12 other ships to reach dry land. There may be times when the Nile Adventurer and its sister ship, Sun Boat IV, dock together, but it is far from the the larger boats on the river.
The Ancient Sites
Your primary reason for chosing to travel to Egypt is most likely to visit its famous ancient sites. Some you will have heard of – such as the Pyramids of Giza and Valley of the Kings – but there may be others with which you are less familiar. We have sent staff to scout the well known sites as well as those a bit off the beaten track, and our Egyptologist guides will weave these together to provide you with a well-rounded, rich learning experience. We may be fortunate to visit a few sites in relative privacy, and this is a truly special experience in a country that sees millions of visitors every year. Most sites are very busy, and although our guides and the cruise schedule promotes distancing ourselves from the crowds, you will find there are times when there are a lot of other travelers around. In spite of this, the ancient sites of Egypt hold the power to enthrall you, and taking a moment to find a quiet space to just take it all in from time to time is important.
Vendors
Another issue of travel in Egypt are the vendors that gather to sell souvenirs or services (like camel rides) at many of the sites. Thankfully, they are kept some distance away, but it is sometimes necessary to exit the sites by "running the guantlet" – departing through a corridor of vendors who seek to get your attention with a friendly hello and by showing off what they have to sell. Our best advice if you don't feel like shopping is to simply ignore them. Even a polite "la shukran" (Arabic for "no, thank you") seems to only give them hope that you might be enticed to buy. While this can be a bit intimidating at first, you will find that you quickly become accustomed to simply walking by. When you do feel like shopping, be prepared to bargain hard, and don't hesitate to ask your guide for advice as to a fair price for something that interests you.
Weather
Egypt is generally considered ideal for travel from November through March. Temperatures at this time of year are generally comfortably warm during the day and cool to chilly at night, and rain is rare. However, heat waves can occur at any time. The following are average temperatures in Cairo and Aswan throughout the year:
Cairo high low
January: 65°F 49°F
March: 73°F 54°F
May: 89°F 64°F
July: 93°F 72°F
Sept: 90°F 69°F
Nov: 75°F 58°F
Aswan high low
January: 70°F 52°F
March: 82°F 61°F
May: 99°F 77°F
July: 103°F 83°F
Sept: 99°F 79°F
Nov: 80°F 63°F
You may obtain more detailed weather information by visiting www.weatherbase.com.
When to Go
Egypt is generally considered ideal for travel from November through March, and if you plan to go during this time, it is usually very important to plan well ahead of time, particularly if your dates are not very flexible. Availability on the boats is usually better from April-October, although it can be very hot during these months. If you prefer to join a scheduled Boundless Journeys group departure, please ask about our Egypt: Nile Exploration itinerary.
Traveler's Responsibility
Trip participants have certain responsibilities to both Boundless Journeys and your fellow travelers. This includes understanding the conditions described in the trip itinerary and making sure it is appropriate for your interests and abilities, based on a review of the trip ratings, consultation with Boundless Journeys' staff, and perhaps your doctor. In addition, trip participants are responsible for preparing for a trip by undertaking the proper fitness training. At the guide's discretion, a participant may be asked to leave the trip if the guide feels that the person's further participation may be detrimental to the individual or to other trip participants. Egypt Private Tour Itinerary
Please note that as this is a Private Collection trip, this itinerary can be modified to suit your interests. This sample represents our recommendation for an 8-day tour in Egypt. A shorter, 7-day itinerary can be arranged by incorporating a 3-night cruise from Aswan to Luxor.
Day 1: Arrival to Cairo
Upon arrival at Cairo International Airport you will be met by a Boundless Journeys representative and transferred in a private air-conditioned vehicle to your first hotel, the Mena House Oberoi. Originally built to accommodate the delegation of royalty and Heads of State during the grand opening of the Suez Canal, the Mena House Oberoi retains its royal atmosphere and was recently ranked among the top hotels in Africa by Travel + Leisure readers. Our rooms all offer views of the pyramids of Giza, giving you your first dramatic glimpse of Egypt’s ancient treasures.
This afternoon and evening you are free to relax after your travels and enjoy the grounds of your historic hotel.
Mena House Oberoi, Giza, Cairo. No meals.
Day 2: Pyramids of the Old Kingdom
Walking tours – easy, 4-5 hours.
Today, immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring treasures of Egypt’s Old Kingdom. The pyramids we see today represent hundreds of years of development in building styles.
We first explore Sakkara, the world-famous step pyramid of King Zoser, the oldest known of Egypt’s 107 pyramids and the world’s first freestanding stone structure. We next explore nearby Dahshour, built by Sneferu, the father of Cheops (of Giza’s Great Pyramid). Explore this “bent pyramid” whose shape was radically altered three times during its construction, and the Red Pyramid, the fourth-highest ever built in Egypt. These curious structures are evidence of the transition period between the step pyramid at Sakkara and the Great Pyramids of Giza.
After lunch, we return to Giza and embark on an unforgettable tour of the Great Pyramids of Giza. The only present-day survivors of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, they are among the world’s greatest tourist attractions and never lose their ability to inspire and overwhelm visitors. Your tour today includes an opportunity to enter inside one of these fabulous monuments and explore the mysteries of its ancient past.
After time to explore the pyramids and perhaps bargain with a local over the price of a camel ride, we continue to the Solar Boat Museum. This simple but well-done museum offers an opportunity to view the 141 foot long re-assembled funerary boat of King Cheops. Found in 1954, it has been hailed as the single most important archaeological find in Egypt since the Tomb of Tutankhamun. We’ll also visit the nearby Sphinx, exploring its temple where preparations for mummification where performed.
Mena House Oberoi, Giza, Cairo. Breakfast and lunch included.
Day 3: Luxor: East Bank Temples
Walking – easy, 2-3 hours.
This morning, depart Cairo on an early flight to Luxor, home to a vast collection of ancient sites from the Middle and New Kingdoms. Upon landing, you'll be met by our representative and transferred to our private dock to board our luxury Nile cruise boat, the Nile Adventurer. Each cabins offers large picture windows, not portholes, framing beautiful views of the river.
After lunch on board and time to enjoy the boat, set out with a small group from the boat and your Egyptologist guide to explore the East Bank of Luxor, starting with the Temple of Karnak, built over more than a thousand years by generations of pharaohs. The great “Hypostyle Hall” is an incredible forest of giant pillars, covering an area larger than Notre Dame Cathedral. It is truly a site to behold.
Next, visit the strikingly graceful Temple of Luxor, dedicated to the god Amun. Strolling through the main road into the temple it is fascinating to see the passage of time – a mosque built on the remains of the temple, and frescoes depicting scenes from Christianity painted over ancient hieroglyphics.
Later this afternoon we have an opportunity to mingle with other cruise guests and the Boat Manager during an introductory cocktail reception, before enjoying our first gourmet dinner on board followed by entertainment of an Egyptian-style belly dancer and whirling dervish.
Nile Adventurer, Luxor. All meals included.
Day 4: Luxor: Valley of the Kings
Walking tours – easy, 3-4 hours. Optional hot air balloon ride (at additional expense).
For those who would like to waken very early, there is the option of a hot air balloon ride over the West Bank. To drift above these ancient sites at sunrise is not an experience you’ll soon forget. Please discuss this option with Boundless Journeys before you travel, or with your guide early in your trip, if you are interested in arranging this.
For those who opt not to go hot air ballooning, we enjoy breakfast on board before boarding a water taxi to cross to the West Bank of Luxor, meeting those who opted for the morning adventure. As the setting sun represented the end of life, the Nile’s West Bank was traditionally a place for burials, whereas the East Bank – where the sun rose – represented life and therefore was home to temples honoring the ancient gods.
We begin our day in the renowned Valley of the Kings where magnificent tombs were carved into the desert rocks, decorated richly, and filled with treasures for the afterlife by generations of pharaohs. Few remained unplundered through the centuries, but the tomb of Tutankhamun remained famously unfound until – local legend has it – Howard Carter’s horse stumbled on the entrance. Explore various tombs, including the relatively modest tomb of Tutankhamun, where his mummy remains on display, and the impressive tomb of Ramses VI. We will also explore the Valley of the Queens, and visit the reconstructed Hatshepsut Temple, rising out of the desert plain in a series of terraces in honor of ancient Egypt’s only female pharaoh. We’ll also make a brief stop for photos at the Colossi of Memnon, known to the ancient Greeks for their haunting voices at dawn (caused by winds in the cracks between the stones).
We return to the boat this afternoon for lunch and to begin our cruise to Esna. There is plenty of time this afternoon to enjoy the amenities of the boat, and simply watch the shoreline pass by, green with palms, while the sandy desert hills loom beyond the water’s reach.
Nile Adventurer, Esna. All meals included.
Day 5: Esna and Edfu
Walking tours – easy, 3-4 hours.
This morning we walk from our ship to the small but interesting Temple of Esna. Now excavated and set far beneath the roads of the more modern Esna of today, the temple illustrates that there must be dozens, if not hundreds, of such ancient sites still buried beneath the Nile’s ever changing banks. Restoration projects are ongoing here to remove centuries of pollution damage, revealing beautiful colors in the carvings underneath.
Later this morning we cruise onward to Edfu Temple, the largest and most completely preserved Pharaonic (albeit Greek-built) temple in Egypt. This extraordinary temple was dedicated to the falcon-headed god, Horus. Today’s cruising is truly pleasant, with plenty of time to relax on the upper deck, enjoy the swimming pool, and watch the feluccas and kids cooling off in the wake of our boat.
After lunch and our visit to Edfu Temple, the ship’s chef offers a cooking demonstration, teaching us a few simple but delicious North African and Middle Eastern recipes, such as hummus and baba ghanoush.
As we cruise to Kom Ombo this evening we enjoy dinner and an “Egyptian Night” party for all guests, with a chance to dress up in a traditional “galabeyya.” Dinner will be a lavish spread of Egyptian specialties, followed by music and dancing for everyone. Even the crew gets in on the fun!
Nile Adventurer, Kom Ombo. All meals included.
Day 6: Kom Ombo, Unfinished Obelisk, and Philae Temple
Walking tours – easy, 3-4 hours.
This morning we walk from our ship to the temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile-god Sobek. The temple stands at a bend in the Nile where in ancient times sacred crocodiles basked in the sun on the riverbank. We explore the temple, its unique carvings depicting surgical instruments, and a “Nilometer” – a well-like structure used to measure the depth of the nearby Nile waters.
We continue on the final leg of our cruise journey, arriving in Aswan after lunch. This afternoon, we visit the Unfinished Obelisk. The granite quarries of Aswan supplied ancient Egypt with most of the hard stone used in pyramids and temples. A huge unfinished obelisk still lays nestled in its place, offering insight into the methods used to cut the enormous blocks of stone.
We’ll then take a short motorboat ride to visit the beautiful Philae Temple on the Island of Agilka. Philae Temple once stood half-submerged by the Nile after construction of the first Aswan Dam, until UNESCO stepped in to move it block-by-block to higher ground. The island setting is very natural, and the temple seems at home framed by lovely trees and views across the water.
Tonight we enjoy a gala dinner for the last night on board, with white-gloved waiters serving gourmet cuisine.
Nile Adventurer, Aswan. All meals included.
Day 7: Abu Simbel and return to Cairo; Egyptian Museum of Antiquities
Walking tours – easy, 3-4 hours.
This morning we board our flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel. Upon arrival we visit the world-renowned site where Ramses II ordered two sun temples carved from limestone mountains between 1290-1124 B.C. At the Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte, four colossal statues of Ramses II sit majestically staring out across Lake Naseer. Six massive statues front the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the cow-headed goddess of love and built in honor of Ramses’ favorite wife, Queen Nefertari.
In the late 1960s the waters that arose with the completion of the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge Abu Simbel. A campaign to save the temples was organized by UNESCO, and they were cut into blocks, raised piece-by-piece, and reassembled in a new position higher up the hillside. The massive job took two years to complete, and the interpretive center describing the process is a testament to the feats of engineering required to accomplish the mission. After ample time to explore the site, we board our flight back to Cairo (via Aswan).
Upon arrival in Cairo, we make our way through the busy streets to the famed Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. Open since 1902, over 7,000 years of Egyptian history are portrayed in exhibits housing more than 120,000 objects. This is the world’s greatest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, and it is said that if you spend just one minute in front of each display it would take nine months to view it all. Our Egyptologist guide introduces us to the highlights, including two grand halls containing countless artifacts from the world-famous tomb of Tutankhamun and one room reserved for his golden treasures. We also will have access to the Royal Mummies Room, where the best-preserved mummies of 11 kings and queens of ancient Egypt are on display, including the Great Ramses II, Egypt’s longest ruling pharaoh. Having traveled in their footsteps in the past several days, now taking a few minutes to simply be with these once-great people is a moving experience.
This afternoon, check in to your deluxe hotel overlooking the Nile.
Sofitel El Gezirah Hotel, Cairo. Breakfast and lunch included.
Day 8: Old Cairo
Walking tours – easy, 3-4 hours.
On your last day in Cairo we begin by exploring the oldest area of the city with your private guide, including the remains of the Fortress of Babylon. First built by the Persians around the 6th century B.C., these ruins are Cairo’s oldest original structure. Within the confines you will find the Church of St. Sergius, where the Holy Family is reported to have stayed, and the Hanging Church, the seat of the Coptic patriarchate for centuries. We’ll visit the newly refurbished Coptic Museum, which displays a wonderful collection of statues, relics, icons, and frescoes. We finish at the oldest Synagogue in Egypt, Ben Ezra. Inside this basilica-style temple, the so-called “Geniza Documents” were found, a treasure hailed as an unparalleled source of information about life of the Jews in Egypt’s past.
Later this morning, stroll through the bustling Khan El- Khalilli bazaar. Founded in the 14th century as a watering stop for caravans, nowadays it is reputedly the largest bazaar in the Middle East. A great spot for doing some shopping, be prepared to bargain for your souvenirs. For lunch we sit down at the Arabian-style Naguib Mahfouz restuarant in the very heart of Khan El-Khalili. Named after the Nobel-prize-winning Egyptian author, the restaurant is steeped in atmosphere and history.
This afternoon we explore Islamic Cairo, including a visit to the Citadel, a spectacular medieval fortress dating from the 12th century, perched on a hill above the city. Also located in the Citadel are the Mosque and Tomb of the great Ottoman ruler Mohamed Ali.
You'll have a late-check out (6:00 p.m.) after which you are free to relax, have dinner on your own, or do some last minute shopping before your transfer to the airport. If you are extending your time in Egypt, Boundless Journeys is happy to assist you with post-tour hotel arrangements.
Breakfast and lunch included.
Please note that this is a typical itinerary, and actual activities may vary to take advantage of weather conditions, local events, and to allow serendipity to play a hand in your experience. Accommodations are as outlined in the itinerary, although we reserve the right to change these should the need arise.

Single Supplements:
Accommodations (hotels, tents, cruise cabins) are based on double occupancy. A single supplement is paid by participants who specifically request single accommodations, subject to availability. If you are traveling alone and wish to share accommodations, we will try to match you with a roommate of the same gender. If you reserve at least 90 days ahead and a roommate is not available, you will only be charged a “forced” single supplement in the amount of 50% of the standard single supplement (unless otherwise noted in the detailed itinerary).* Single accommodations are limited so you are encouraged to reserve early!
* This does not apply to cruises in the Galapagos Islands or Antarctica. Please see these trip pages for more details.

Testimonials
"When I planned to make a trip to Italy I knew I wanted to feel it as much as see it. I was hoping to eat good food, drink great wine, and then hike off all those calories. I did just that, while getting vast knowledge about the art, grapes, and architecture. Our guides Alex and Christopher are an asset to your company. Without them the trip never would have been as memorable and enjoyable. We all agree it exceeded our expectations. I have begun my own 'Boundless Journey.'"
