Namibia
The perfect complement to your explorations in southern Africa, from Namibia, to Botswana, Zambia, or South Africa.
Skeleton Coast Overview
Nestled in a sheltered bend on the dry Khumib River, within a private concession of the Skeleton Coast National Park is our luxury desert camp, an ideal place to complement your explorations in southern Africa: Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa. Due to restricted access very few outsiders have visited this enchantingly desolate and windswept piece of paradise.
The cold Benguela ocean current, rising from the icy waters of Antarctica, allows for very little inland rainfall has resulted in the formation of one of the world's most ancient deserts -- the Namib. This particular region -- the Skeleton Coast -- reflects an ongoing struggle for survival: a coast strewn with mammal skeletons, shipwrecks, roaring dunes, windswept plains, seal colonies, and wild desolation. It is also home to one of the last true Stone Age cultures on earth: the Himba people.
Because of the uniqueness and vastness of this area, we'll embark in 4x4 vehicles on full day nature drives, usually returning to camp in the evening. You'll discover the clay castles of the Hoarusib River, Rocky Point, the roaring dunes, lichen fields, seal colonies, Himba villages, shipwreck sites and secret water seeps that attract game like oryx, springbok, giraffe, ostrich, brown hyena, jackal and other smaller mammals.

Our easiest trips are generally hotel-based cultural and nature journeys that typically offer light activity. Optional walks and hikes (approximately 2 to 4 hours) through gentle terrain with little elevation gain or loss. Altitude is typically not a factor on these tours. Other activities, such as snorkeling or sea kayaking, are optional. Examples: Indochina, Galapagos Islands Cruise, Tanzania.
EASY TO MODERATE 2
Hotel nights and/or deluxe, safari-style camping. Walking, hiking (approximately 3 to 5 hours), kayaking, or other activities on most days. Trails and paths are through rolling countryside, with occasional steep trails with up to 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Many of our hotel-based walking trips are in this category. Examples: Tuscany & Umbria, Morocco, Costa Rica.
MODERATE 3
Full day hikes (approximately 4 to 6 hours) most days on unpaved trails and paths through hilly terrain with typical elevation gains and losses of 1,000 to 2,000 feet. There may be occasional short steep sections of trail. Examples: Canadian Rockies, Scotland, Spain.
MODERATE TO STRENUOUS 4
Full day hikes (approximately 5 to 7 hours) through mountainous terrain with significant elevation gains and losses (2,000 to 3,000 feet). Terrain may be rugged with uneven footpaths. The average altitude is generally no more than 12,000 feet. Options are limited. These trips typically involve some camping or simple accommodations.Examples: Tour du Mont Blanc, Peru Trek.
MOST STRENUOUS 5
Full-day trekking (approximately 6 to 8 hours) through rugged mountainous terrain with steep climbs and descents and one or more of the following present: elevation gains and losses of as much as 4,000 feet, altitude that exceeds 12,000 feet, and rugged uneven footpaths. Nights 1-4: Skeleton Coast Camp
Private Reserve, Skeleton Coast National Park

Six Meru-style tents with spacious bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, and a central area made up of an open lounge, bar and dining area offer sweeping views of the desert. Weather permitting, evening meals are often served in the open-air dining room under an old, gnarled leadwood tree.
Detailed Itinerary
DAY 1
Skeleton Coast Scenic Flight
Morning flight and afternoon nature drive with some walking -- easy.
This morning you will meet our representative at Windhoek International Airport or Ongava Camp outside Etosha National Park (depending on your pre-Skeleton Coast plans) and depart by light aircraft on a 2 1/2-hour scenic flight to Skeleton Coast Camp (the flight is a bit shorter from Ongava). Your flight takes you northwest over the interior plateau of Namibia, flying over the striking geological features of Damaraland, craters of long-dead volcanoes and meteorite impact sites, finally meeting the coastline at the Hoarusib River mouth. From there we do some low level flying along the coast as far as Rocky Point, viewing the coastal plains and dunes from the air.
We arrive in time for lunch and settle into camp on the Khumib River. An afternoon introduction to the desert environs of the region includes a drive through dry riverbeds, expansive plains, hidden springs and towering dunes, concluding with sundowners on the rugged coast near the lonely graves of seafarers from long ago.

DAYS 2-4
Exploring the Skeleton Coast
Nature drives and optional walks -- easy.
After breakfast, we depart on our day's excursion, taking in the highlights of this desert environment. Activities are usually full day nature drives, returning to camp in the evening. The areas we traverse are vast and excursions vary somewhat dependent on weather, the season, and animal movements. Areas you may visit include the clay castles of the Hoarusib River, Rocky Point, seal colonies, Himba villages (one of the last remaining stone age cultures on earth), natural springs, immense lichen fields, roaring dunes, and more. Our guide also provides an in-depth look at the specially adapted reptiles, birds, insects and plants that have evolved over the ages to survive in this seemingly inhospitable place.
By sunset each evening we return to camp and enjoy a leisurely dinner as the sky above us transforms into an incredible blanket of stars.
