Cambodia was also great: Incredible temples, help with best picture locations, detailed history and stories, guide picked some "off script” local restaurants that were excellent. The tuk tuk rides in Cambodia were a hoot and we took advantage of them many times.

The Temples of Angkor

Regions Visited:

Angkor

The temples of Angkor, which cover an area the size of New York’s five boroughs, were built from the 9th to the 12th centuries by the Khmer empire that controlled not only Cambodia but also large parts of what are now Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.

With their grand scale and extraordinary detail, the temples rank among humanity’s most supreme artistic expressions — and Angkor Wat is the largest and most breathtaking monument at Angkor. It never fails to reward the first time or repeat visitor with its grand scale, surreal bas-reliefs, and unbelievable attention to detail.

Siem Reap

Located just on the outskirts of the temples of Angkor is Siem Reap, the capital city of Cambodia’s Siem Reap Province. As gateway to the Angkor region — and one of the most spectacular and visited sites in Southeast Asia — Siem Reap has transformed itself dramatically over the years.

In just four decades, it has gone from a land under siege by the Khmer Rouge to a popular resort destination, featuring outstanding accommodations, restaurants, bars, museums, and other attractions. Must visits include Siem Reap’s markets: Psar Leu ("Higher Market"), Psah Chas ("Old Market") and the Angkor Night Market.

This brief sojourn explores one of Southeast Asia's most important UNESCO World Heritage sites - the ancient temples of Angkor Wat. It is the perfect extension to your other explorations in Asia.

When to Go

The cooler dry season lasts from October to March. In October and November, arriving just after the rainy season, you'll have the benefit of being there for the newly greened trees and rice paddies, as well as the much clearer air quality that can be expected at this time of year. December through March remain much drier and a bit cooler than during the summer months. However, it is possible to have some rain at any time of year.

Cuisine

The ingredients and flavors of cuisine in Southeast Asia are varied and complex. Cambodian staples are rice and fish, seasoned with chilies and garlic, or in some cases coconut milk. Amok is a local favorite: fish in coconut, wrapped in banana leaf. Meals also often include hot soups. However, please note that you will also be able to find some Western dishes that are familiar should you need a bit of comfort food. Vegetarians can be accommodated with advance notice.
