“A very memorable trip where we were very glad to be with Boundless Journeys. Our guide was superb… he worked very hard to provide us with such an experience, locating animals and avoiding the crowds.”

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL -- GIVING BACK

Boundless Journeys focuses on traveling responsibly and
encouraging our guests to do the same. As sensitive travelers, we
strive to live up to our responsibilities to the places we love at
home and abroad by giving back a little of the gifts they have given us.

In the midst of one of East Africa’s most beautiful game viewing
areas are people living in extreme poverty, with few resources and voices rarely heard by the rest of the world. This year when you travel with Boundless Journeys on our July 14–23 Tanzania Migration Safari, you can take part in a rare opportunity to make a difference in an African community. The Foundation for African Medicine and Education’s Karatu Medical Project (www.fameus.net) has two goals: construction of a permanent medical diagnostic facility, and the development of a mobile medical unit capable of bringing essential medical care to the large number of individuals living in rural villages who are unable to access adequate care in a city or town clinic.

THE F.A.M.E. STORY

In July 2002, Frank Artress, an American physician, and his wife,
Susan Gustafson, an educational psychologist, began an ascent of
Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. At the time, they did not know Frank would nearly die atop that mountain, and how the critical moments that followed would shape the rest of their lives.
The perseverance, generosity, and resourcefulness of their guide and his crew in their rescue awakened Frank and Susan to the resilience of the human spirit—that place inside each of us where grace and strength reside. After several months back in the U.S., Frank and Susan decided to return to Tanzania, this time to contribute back to its people. From this place, the Foundation for African Medicine and Education, F.A.M.E., was born.

2008 TANZANIA CHARITY SAFARI -- HOW YOUR PARTICIPATION WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

• A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated directly to F.A.M.E. to help accomplish their current goals.
• Trip participants will spend a day traveling with the mobile clinic and F.A.M.E. founders Dr. Frank Artress and Susan Gustafson, meeting patients and assisting with the administration of routine checkups.
• Trip participants will deliver much needed medical supplies to the diagnostic center.

Tanzania Charity Safari Overview

Days 1-2: Evening arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha, Tanzania. Transfer to our beautiful highland lodge with views of Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Experience an incredible flight over the Great Rift Valley and the Serengeti to our mobile camp on a private reserve bordering Serengeti National Park. At sunset, enjoy drinks by the campfire and delicious meals prepared by our bush chef. Soak in the sounds of the Serengeti – distant roars of lions and the rhythmic beat of hooves.

Days 3-4: Game drives in the Serengeti from our private mobile tented camp. On our private reserve, we join local Maasai for a walk tracking the movements of resident wildlife. Night drives are another unique opportunity on this private reserve. Visit the Seregeti Lion Project research center and settle into the comfort of our charming lodge in the central Serengeti.

Day 5: Ascend from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Hike into the Olduvai Gorge, known to the world as the cradle of humanity, where the Leakeys made their incredible discoveries of remains of the earliest humans. Known to the Maasai as Oltupai, for a flower that grows abundantly here, the gorge is steeped in history.

Days 6-7: Arise early to be the first on the crater floor as the sun rises and while the wildlife is most active. Enjoy an extended game drive, taking time to observe the interactions of the lions, cheetah, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, buffalo and black rhino. After a final morning in the crater, descent into the Great Rift Valley. Here we meet the founders of F.A.M.E., and learn about their experiences starting a medical organization in Tanzania.

Day 8: Join the F.A.M.E. mobile clinic for an unforgettable day of helping the local people. Depending on current needs, we may help with "well-child" checkups in a local school, or deliver supplies to outlying villages. No matter how we participate, this is sure to be a rich and memorable experience. Later in the day, enter Tarangire National Park and game drive to our permanent deluxe tented camp, home for the next two nights.

Days 9-10: Early in the morning, wake to watch the antics of monkeys while sipping coffee on your private porch. Tarangire is a dry season paradise, with huge herds of elephants and other mammals that congregate near the dwindling water supplies. Finally, say goodbye before your evening flight, or extend your tour on the exotic island of Zanzibar.

Optional Zanzibar Extension, Days 10-13: White sand beaches, great snorkeling, and exotic surroundings make the spice island of Zanzibar an ideal end to your journey (contact our office for details 1-800-941-8010).
