TOUR RATING

Peru hikingtour - Machu Picchu hiking tour - hiking the Inca Trail: easy to moderate hiking

Easy to moderate walking and hiking with one moderately strenuous option, one day of optional easy sea kayaking, altitudes of 8,000 to 13,000 feet.

This epic journey encompasses the legendary locales of Peru and Bolivia ― Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca, and also seeks out the more remote, less well-known experiences that make travel in South America so interesting. We begin in Cusco, a vibrant crossroads of Inca and Spanish Colonial cultures. Our Sacred Valley walking and hiking prepares us for a day of Inca Trail trekking to Machu Picchu, the lost city perched amazingly amid dramatic jungle-covered peaks in the Andes. We then journey by rail to the shores of Lake Titicaca, where we have the unique experience of kayaking amid the floating islands of Uros. Our days in Bolivia are spent exploring the sacred Island of the Sun and Island of the Moon on foot and by boat. We delve into the mysteries of ancient Tiahuanaco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before a final toast to our epic journey in La Paz.

Peru & Bolivia Trip Overview

Days 1-3: Meet in Cusco and descend into the Sacred Valley, exploring the important sites of Sacsayhuaman, Ollantaytambo, and Pisaq. Meet local Quechuan villagers and bargain for crafts at an outdoor market.

Days 4-7: Trek the final miles of the famed Inca Trail* through Intipunku (the Gate of the Sun), experiencing that first, unforgettable view of Machu Picchu from above. Explore the ruins at your own pace, before returning to Cusco and boarding a first-class train for Lake Titicaca.

Days 8-10: Venture onto Lake Titicaca by kayak, meeting the people of Taquile and Uros, the floating islands. Enter Bolivia and hike across the Island of the Sun and Island of the Moon, visiting dramatic sites of ancient baptism and human sacrifice.

Days 11-13: Discover Copacabana, a colorful town on the shores of Titicaca, home to the “dark virgin” ― one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Bolivia. Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tiahuanaco and depart from La Paz.

*Please note that Inca Trail hiking permits are limited, so you are encouraged to reserve early.

Step Away from the Ordinary ~ Peru & Bolivia Tour

The floating islands of Uros are home to one of the most fascinating and unusual communities anywhere. A must-see for anyone visiting Lake Titicaca, Boundless Journeys' guests approach by the unobtrusive means of sea kayaking, paddling as the locals do -- even if the boats are a little different.
