TRIP RATING

Peru hikingtour - Machu Picchu hiking tour - hiking the Inca Trail: easy to moderate hiking

“The guides were EXCELLENT. They turned a great trip into something unforgettable.”

―S. Berchier, Peru, July 2007

The incredible beauty of Peru is evident on this journey that explores the culturally rich farmlands of the Sacred Valley and reaches the majestic heights of the Andes and the lost citadel of Machu Picchu. We begin in Cusco, taking time to explore the beautiful Spanish colonial cathedrals and rare artwork with its odd blend of traditional Quechua and Christian symbols. We then descend to the Sacred Valley, formed by Andean foothills and the Urubamba River, where our local guides expose us to fascinating ruins and accompany us to festive markets. Here we are free to bargain for fine weavings and traditional carvings, or to simply soak in the vibrant colors and sounds of everyday life in Peru. Between beautiful hikes, we are welcomed into the home of local weavers, where we learn about the traditions of life in the valley. When we leave the Sacred Valley, we are prepared for the climax of our journey, a day of hiking the ancient Inca Trail to the lost citadel of Machu Picchu. We have plenty of time to explore this mysterious and important center of Inca life before returning to Cusco.

Highlights of Peru Tour Overview

Day 1: Arrive in Lima, Peru for an overnight before our morning flight to Cusco.

Day 2: After flying from Lima in the morning, our Peru walking tour begins in Cusco, the center of the ancient Inca world. Explore the many Spanish and Inca treasures in and around the city. In the afternoon, acclimatize to the altitude with easy walking past the ruins of Tambomachay, Q’enqo, and Sacsayhuaman. Enjoy a relaxing evening dining in Cusco, before retiring to our hotel—perfectly located in the city center.

Day 3: Descend into the Sacred Valley. Explore the fascinating ruins of Ollantaytambo. If it is a market day, bargain with local artisans for traditional Peruvian weavings and handmade pottery.

Days 4-5: Hike Peru's Inca Trail,* the famed ancient footpath through stunning mountain scenery past the picture-perfect ruins of Wiñay Wayna, through Intipunku (the Gate of the Sun), and into Machu Picchu*. Immerse yourself in the wonder of Machu Picchu, with a full morning of exploration, including the serene hour of sunrise for those who wish to wake early. Return to Cusco by scenic train for a celebratory dinner at an excellent local restaurant and a final evening at our fine hotel.

Day 6: Depart from Cusco, Peru.

*Please note that Inca Trail hiking permits are limited and issued "first come, first served," so you are encouraged to reserve early.

Step Away from the Ordinary ~ Peru & Machu Picchu

Think back to the first time you saw a picture of Peru and Machu Picchu. Wherever it may have been, we’re guessing it held you in the same trance we experienced seeing it for the first time years ago. Our Peruvian adventure vacation culminates by hiking on the Inca trail into the heart of Machu Picchu. And we return early the next morning, before the crowds arrive, to explore at our own pace. There is simply no better way to experience Machu Picchu than to be there for the quiet of sunrise, and Boundless Journeys will take you there.
