Making the Right Impact with Boundless Journeys

At Boundless Journeys, we are committed to exploring the world in a responsible manner. We continually seek ways to tread lightly across the unique landscapes and diverse cultures on this planet. One of our core values is to contribute positively to the world community—striving to preserve traditions and cultures and protect fragile natural habitats.

Making Connections

Our journeys are designed to facilitate meaningful connections with the people and cultures of the places we visit. On some of our Boundless Journeys tours, you’ll have the opportunity to visit organizations working to protect the environment and improve the livelihoods of local communities.

Here are a couple of our favorites:

Guests on our Bhutan: Hiking in the Peaceful Kingdom tour visits a Buddhist college for monks where we have the opportunity to sit down with young monks to discuss their lives and world views. Peru: The Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu In a remote village in the Sacred Valley, Boundless Journeys groups visit a community initiative to promote the preservation of potato seeds, while sharing a traditional Quechua lunch prepared by a partnership of local women.

Going Local

Whenever possible, we use small, locally operated hotels that have sound environmental practices; groups dine at restaurants that feature fresh and authentic regional cuisine; we choose partners that strive for the highest standard of responsible practices; and we employ local guides; all of which support local economies.

Costa Rica: Highlands to the Coast Family Adventure In Quepos, Boundless Journeys’ guests stay at Hotel Si Como No, which is committed to best environmental practices and actively supports the local community through outreach and educational initiatives. The design and construction of Si Como No incorporates sustainable design principles, including a gray water management system, solar panels, and comprehensive recycling programs. The hotel has also invested in educational, environmental, and community programs in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area. New Zealand: Alpine & Coastal Hiking In Arthur’s Pass, we stay at Wilderness Lodge, set on a working sheep farm and nature reserve, where much of the food served at their restaurant is from their own farm. Zanzibar: The Spice Island Our guests stay at Breezes Beach Club and Spa, a hotel that has demonstrated its dedication to the local community through the establishment of the Bwejuu maternity clinic.

Conserving Wild Places

On many of our Boundless Journeys tours, we explore stunning natural landscapes where conservation is of the utmost importance. As visitors, we not only tread lightly, but we also actively contribute to the conservation of parks and protected areas.

Here are just a few examples:

Nepal The purchase of trekking permits provides funding for the Annapurna Area Conservation Project on our Bhutan and Nepal: Himalayan Kingdoms Hiking and Nepal: Annapurna Trekking and Rafting journeys.

Palau We practice low-impact camping on our snorkeling and sea-kayaking journey through the beautiful Rock Islands. Palau is a member of the Pacific Islands Forum, which works to mitigate the impact of climate change on vulnerable, low-lying island nations.

Southern Africa We work with Wilderness Safaris in southern Africa, the leader in conservation, community development, and safaris in Southern Africa.

Resources for the Responsible Traveler

We aim to educate our guests on the best responsible travel practices for the destinations we visit. When you reserve a trip with Boundless Journeys, we include suggestions for ways to tread lightly and have a positive impact while on your journey.

Looking for Inspiration?

When it comes to giving back in the places where Boundless Journeys travels, our guests often inspire us. We would like to share some stories from our guests and encourage you to connect with us and share your own ideas for making a difference.

Here’s how a few past Boundless Journeys guests have given back:

Boundless Journeys guests, Barbara Bales and Pat Cairns, created The Botswana School Project in 2012, when they saw that there was a need for books, supplies, and computers in the schools they visited in northern Botswana. With the support of family, friends, work colleagues, and schools back home, the project’s first shipment of donations became the talk of the town in Maun, Botswana, the jumping-off place for most safaris in the Okavango Delta and Kalahari Desert.

A guest who traveled on our Myanmar: Ancient Passages trip is currently raising donations from family and friends for the Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp. The camp has established a small, veterinarian-staffed clinic for the elephants and is in need of medications and nutritional diet supplements. It also requires assistance for its forest recovery and re-plantation initiatives, as well as for a program to support Mahout (elephant caretaker) families by providing them with educational, housing, and employment opportunities.

A guest who joined our Bhutan: Hiking in the Peaceful Kingdom trip brought along infant clothing donated by Baby Teresa, an Australian clothing company. As she walked the mountain trails to remote monasteries, rural communities, and schools, she donated the clothing to families she met along the way.

Boundless Journeys would like to thank our guests for their creative ideas on how we can all make a difference as world travelers!
