COVID operations FAQs

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we have been adapting to the sometimes daily changes in health recommendations, travel restrictions, and government policies, along with modifying our operations accordingly. We have received many calls and emails over the last few weeks and hope that this page can help answer any questions that you have, but as always, please feel free to contact us directly, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Is Boundless Journeys' office open?

Until further notice, our Vermont-based home office staff are currently working remotely. The best way to reach us is via email. If you would like to call the office and leave a message, we are checking our voicemail daily and will return your call as soon as we can.

What trips are you still planning to operate?

Right now, we have postponed all trips departing through August 31, 2020. We are hopeful that some fall and winter trips will run as scheduled, many are full or nearly so. However, as departures draw near, we will reassess the global and destination situation as needed.

Do you have any domestic trips?

We understand that you may be hesitant to travel far from home or internationally this year, but you may still be looking forward to getting away when this is all over. For 2020, we are offering a Peak Foliage Hiking trip in October right in our own beautiful state of Vermont during the most colorful season. That will also be offering in 2021. Other 2021 domestic destination we are offering include: Washington’s San Juan Islands, New Mexico, North Caroline’s Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Adirondacks. We are working on finalizing details for those trips and hope to publish them online soon.

When will you make the decision to cancel a trip due to COVID-19?

Our top priority is keeping our guests safe. At 45 days prior to departure for both our small group and private adventures, Boundless Journeys will make the determination regarding operating a trip based on information from the U.S. State Department, World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and our local partners. However, as things change daily, we will cancel the trip within the 45 day period should the situation become unsafe after our initial determination.

What happens if Boundless Journeys cancels my trip due to COVID-19?

For small group and private departures before December 31, 2020:

If we postpone, change, or cancel your trip, you will have the option to travel on new dates that we provide or accept a travel credit good for travel before December 31, 2021. We may in our discretion, allow you to transfer to another destination.

I'm currently reserved and not sure if I should travel. What if I cancel?

We have revised and relaxed our scheduled and private trip final payment deadline to 60 days prior to departure (previously 90 days and 120 days, respectively) to provide you with more time to make your ultimate decision. If you do decide it’s not the right time for you to travel, there are two options:

  1. You may choose to transfer to a later date penalty free up to 61 days prior to departure.
  2. You may choose to postpone 61 days or more prior to departure and not reschedule your trip right now, in which case we will issue you a travel credit for your amount paid to be used prior to December 31, 2021, less any non-refundable expenses.

If you do not transfer or cancel 61 days or more prior to departure, you are indicating to us that you are comfortable traveling, and we will plan accordingly. At or within 60 days, fees may be applied according to the schedule detailed on our Terms & Conditions page.

If I reserve a 2021 trip, what are the cancellation policies?

Can travel insurance help me?

Unfortunately, this is a complicated question. It depends on which company and which policy you purchased, as well as the reason for why you are canceling your trip. Generally speaking, unless you added the “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage, likely nothing related to COVID-19 is covered under travel insurance.

The best thing to do if you have specific questions about your coverage is to call your travel insurance company. Understandably due to the global travel situation, you are likely to have a long wait time to speak with someone. However, a policy expert is the best person to speak with.

If you are interested in reserving, we are happy to provide a quote for travel insurance that includes the Cancel for Any Reason coverage.
