David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

A leader in elephant conservation and wildlife rehabilitation efforts, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust operates an elephant orphanage located in Nairobi National Park. Visitors can watch the baby elephants during their bottle-feeding time, and afterward see them playing in the mud, wrestling with each other, or enjoying a dust bath. The orphanage’s elephant experience is open for only one hour a day, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Private visits are available in the afternoon to patrons who adopt an elephant through the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Nairobi National Museum

Step into Kenya’s abundant nature, history, arts, and culture at the Nairobi National Museum. Featuring a variety of temporary and permanent galleries and exhibits, there’s a lot to explore, including a snake park and botanic garden. For a comprehensive experience, you can join a guided tour, which provides insight into the museum and the country.

Giraffe Centre

Feed giraffes from the palm of your hand! Friendly staff will guide you through the feeding process and tell you all about these beautiful, endangered animals. Take a stroll and enjoy the breathtaking views on the trail that winds through the sanctuary. If you’re not ready to leave, pause for refreshment at the tea house.  

Kazuri Beads Factory

The Kazuri Beads Factory provides regular employment opportunities to disadvantaged members of society, primarily single mothers. As you tour this remarkable place, you’ll observe the women’s skill on display as they create stunning beaded jewelry and pottery. After touring the factory and meeting some of the artisans, you can shop their selection of handmade pieces—they make wonderful gifts!

Karura Forest Reserve

Like New York’s Central Park, the Karura Forest Reserve is an oasis of green only a short drive from the city center. As you amble on this urban forest’s paths, you’ll be surrounded by greenery, breathtaking views, and wildlife. If you need a breather after getting in your steps, there’s delicious food and drink at the forest’s open-air cafe.

Bomas of Kenya

Experience the vibrant heritage of Kenya’s diverse tribes, from the Maasai to the Kikuyu. A visit to each boma, or homestead, provides an opportunity to soak in the music, traditions, and dance of each unique culture. After exploring the various villages, be sure to attend performances by the different communities in the main hall.

Ngong Hills

Hike up the trail on these lush green slopes and you’re rewarded with amazing views of the Great Rift Valley and Nairobi. In addition to scenery, these hills are home to a diverse range of wildlife—birdwatchers especially will enjoy what the trail offers. If you’re looking for a little adventure, there’s a zipline activity available. Just remember to pack appropriately as there are strong winds at higher elevations.

Brown’s Cheese Factory & Farm

Say cheese! Just a half-hour outside of Nairobi, this factory offers fun with a side of education. It’s been making cheese for over thirty years and supports the community by sourcing milk from local farmers.  You’ll work up an appetite as you learn their process for making cheese (and ice cream!). Happily, you can taste what you will see—there’s a cheese tasting and three-course lunch.
