GETTING AROUND REYKJAVIK

Enjoy art, culture, and Nordic history in Reykjavik. Fill a day or two checking out its terrific music scene, great food, and several fascinating museums. Taking the Flybus from the airport is the easiest and most efficient option—tickets can be purchased at the airport stand. BLUE LAGOON

Located en route from the airport to downtown Reykjavik, it’s best to go via the Flybus, since your hotel room may not be ready with an early-morning arrival.

WHALE WATCH

If the weather is cooperative, you may want to reserve a whale-watching tour from the harbor.

1. HOT DOG STAND

Perhaps the most famous hot dog stand in the world, it’s known for hot dogs made with all-Icelandic, free-range meat, making a truly gourmet hot dog. Order it loaded—with sweet brown mustard, relish, and a mayonnaise-based sauce—you won’t be disappointed.

2. INDOOR FLEA MARKET

Adjacent to the hot dog stand, the indoor flea market is a fun way to mix with locals and look out for unique souvenirs.

3. SETTLEMENT EXHIBITION

Built around the ruins of a Viking longhouse, one of the oldest man-made structure found thus far in Iceland.

4. REYKJAVIK ART MUSEUM

With three locations, this museum houses sculptures and artwork by Icelandic artists.

5. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ICELAND

Offering a variety of fascinating exhibitions that illustrate Iceland’s history from prehistory to present day
culture.

6. HALLGRÍMSKIRKJA

This magnificent, stark, Lutheran church a offers 360-degree view over Iceland from the top of the tower.

7. LAUGAVEGUR

Built around the ruins of a Viking longhouse, one of the oldest man-made structure found thus far in Iceland.

8. SKÓLAVÖRÐUSTÍGUR

One of the most attractive streets in Reykjavík running from Laugavegur up to the magnificent church of Hallgrímskirkja, the street has charming old houses with stores and galleries where you can find everything from Scandinavian-style household goods, souvenirs, and fine woolen products to cafes.
