On our Advent Christmas journey through Germany and Austria, historic towns glow beneath strings of lights, the scent of gingerbread and mulled wine fills the streets, and Christmas markets become gathering places for local families, craftspeople, musicians, and friends.

Rather than focusing on the largest and busiest markets, we seek out smaller, more atmospheric places where regional traditions still take center stage. In Bavaria, discover the traditional market town of Berchtesgaden beneath the Watzmann, then continue through the winter landscapes of Austria and Germany to Lindau on Lake Constance, where Christmas spills onto the waterfront and a festive Christmas Ship crosses the lake.
