From Athens to the Aegean: A Boundless Journey Through Timeless Greece

Image of Santorini spilling into the ocean--part of Boundless Journeys' Greece hiking tour.

I just returned from experiencing our Greece journey firsthand, and I’m still trying to find the words for how extraordinary it truly was. From the ancient streets of Athens to the quiet villages of Tinos and the breathtaking cliffs of Santorini, this Greece hiking trip was inspiring and transformative.

Our adventure began in Athens, where I was awestruck by the Acropolis. Standing beneath the Parthenon, surrounded by monuments that have endured for thousands of years, was one of those moments that makes you feel connected to something much larger than yourself. What amazed me most was realizing that ancient history isn’t confined to museums in Athens, it lives beneath the city itself. Ruins appear under restaurants, hotels, and everyday buildings, as if the entire city rests atop layers of civilization.

From there, we traveled into the heart of the Cyclades Islands, where Greece revealed an entirely different side of itself. Tinos was one of my favorite surprises. A quieter, less-visited island filled with authenticity and warmth. We wandered through tiny villages with narrow lanes, and terraced hillsides stretching toward the sea. Life moves more slowly there. It feels untouched. One of the highlights was meeting Mrs. Nikolita, who will personally welcome our groups into her home for an unforgettable hands-on cooking class. Sharing stories, laughter, and local dishes together felt like being invited into someone’s family. And the food . . . I can still taste it all. Fresh seafood pulled from the Aegean, incredible Greek cheeses, local wines, and wild asparagus picked from the trails. Every meal felt connected to the land and the history surrounding us.

Zeus, the highest peak in the Cyclades. The views were absolutely staggering with endless blue seas, rugged mountains, and whitewashed villages scattered below us. Reaching the top felt both exhilarating and humbling, as though we were standing at the meeting point of mythology and nature.

Finally, we arrived in Santorini, and somehow the beauty continued to surpass every expectation. We hiked across the island toward Oia along cliffside trails overlooking the caldera and the sparkling Aegean Sea. At times I genuinely couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The colors, the light, the scale of it all was almost unfathomable.

Paddling beneath towering volcanic cliffs, through tunnels and caves, with a seaside picnic, was unforgettable.

What made this experience truly meaningful was experiencing it alongside our incredible local guide, Dimitris. By the end of the journey, it felt like we had made a close friend. Throughout the trip, we shared countless laughs and learned so much about the ancient history, culture, and traditions of these islands.

This journey touched me in a way I didn’t expect. It wasn’t just beautiful, it was immersive, soulful, and stirring.

We look forward to sharing this experience with you on our Greece: Athens to the Aegean Islands tour.
