Thailand’s Chiang Mai Lantern Festival (Yi Peng ): What Is It and How to See It in 2027

Experience Thailand’s spectacular November lantern (Yi Peng) festival, where thousands of glowing lights illuminate the night sky in a celebration of reflection and new beginnings.

Every November, Chiang Mai celebrates Yi Peng, a centuries-old Buddhist festival of light and renewal. For travelers joining Boundless Journeys’ November 6–15, 2027, Northern Thailand Adventure, the celebration offers a rare opportunity to participate in a traditional sky lantern release. It’s a symbolic gesture of letting go of misfortune and welcoming new beginnings.

All around you, delicate paper lanterns swell with light as the night air hums with murmuring voices and flickering flames. You steady your own lantern, its paper trembling in the breeze like butterfly wings.

Warm air fills the lantern and you release it into the night, watching it rise above the crowd to join thousands of golden lights drifting over Chiang Mai, creating a shimmering constellation across the sky.

What Is the Chiang Mai Lantern Festival?

Chiang Mai has celebrated Yi Peng (pronounced yee peng) for centuries, a legacy of the city’s history as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Rooted in northern Thailand’s Buddhist traditions, the festival brings together religious ceremonies, illuminated temples, decorative lanterns, and community celebrations.

The scent of incense hangs in the air as families arrive with offerings, monks chant prayers, and candlelight dances across intricate carvings.

Behind the festivities lies a deeply held Buddhist belief that generosity, good deeds, and acts of devotion bring positive karma. Lanterns are also associated with wisdom and spiritual illumination, giving Yi Peng a significance that goes well beyond its spectacular nighttime displays.

It’s this blend of celebration and spiritual devotion that makes the festival so captivating.

What’s it Like to Release a Sky Lantern in Chiang Mai?

The lanterns themselves are simple constructions of lightweight paper stretched over slender frames. A small fuel source heats the air inside, gradually creating enough lift to carry them upward.

What makes the experience so compelling is the contrast between the intimacy of releasing a single lantern and the extraordinary scale of the celebration. Each begins its journey in someone’s hands, yet together they create a spectacle unlike almost anything else. What Will You Leave Behind at Yi Peng in 2027?

There’s no shortage of spectacular sights in the world, but few invite you to become part of the experience quite like Yi Peng. Rather than simply watching from the sidelines, guests take part in a coordinated lantern-release event, joining thousands of participants in one of Chiang Mai’s most unforgettable traditions.

Amid thousands of glowing lanterns and a sky transformed by light, the most meaningful part of the evening is something photographs cannot fully capture: the personal intention behind your own lantern. And this is the real beauty of Yi Peng.

When is the Chiang Mai Lantern Festival in 2027?

Chiang Mai’s spectacular Yi Peng Lantern Festival is expected to take place November 13–14, 2027, with the main celebrations coinciding with the full moon on November 14. And the timing couldn’t be better! On Day 8 of Boundless Journeys’ Northern Thailand Festival Trip, we’ll witness thousands of glowing lanterns rising into the night sky during a special celebration near Chiang Mai. On Day 9, the magic continues with Loy Krathong, as candlelit floral offerings float along the Ping River and festivities fill the city.

Two extraordinary festivals, two unforgettable evenings, and one perfectly timed journey.
