Known as the “Isle de Beaute” or “mountain in the sea”, the island of Corsica is a spectacular land mass of towering mountains, lush forests, pristine beaches, and white cliffs. Surrounded by the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, and Mediterranean Seas, Corsica is dominated by the Parc Naturel Regional de la Corse, which encapsulates its stunning natural beauty. It is a hiker’s paradise.
On our France hiking tour of Corsica, you’ll follow rugged trails through forests, to summits and along this island’s spectacular coastline. Along the way, you’ll explore historic sites, picturesque villages, and interact with local communities and artisans. This trip encapsulates the best of Southern Corsica’s hikes, villages and cuisine as an idyllic island immersion.

Arrival: Ajaccio to Bonifacio - Pertusatu Cape
Welcome to Ajaccio, Corsica! “The Dolce Vita” is Corsica’s largest city. Nestled in the Golfe d’Ajaccio, this seaside resort embodies the Mediterranean way of life with modern benefits: cafés, shaded squares, artisan shops, white sandy beaches. This morning, we meet our guide, then drive a two-hour scenic route to the fortified town of Bonifacio, perched high above the sea.
Awaiting us is a hike along the iconic cliffs to the Pertusatu Lighthouse, with breathtaking views of the Strait of Bonifacio, looking south to Italy’s Sardinia. Built in 1844, the seventy-foot high square tower lighthouse is the second built in Corsica. The Pertusatu Cape is known for its striking white cliffs, over three hundred feet high, preserved by the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve.
This evening allows time to explore the labyrinth of narrow streets before a welcome dinner at our seaside hotel.
Hotel CaravelleBonifacio, France
This charming hotel is in the heart of the port city of Bonifacio, the “City of Cliffs”. Located walking distance to shops, beaches, bars, and restaurants, enjoy the water views from the terrace overlooking the port.
Uomo di Cagna
This morning, we travel north to discover Uomo di Cagna: a round-trip hike leading to a 4000’ summit. Atop the mountain, amidst a chaotic cluster of black granite, stands L’Uomo di Cagna, a precariously balanced stack of rocks. The summit plateau offers an expansive view of the southern coastline.
After a rewarding hike, we head into the heart of Southern Corsica to the charming village of Zonza, amidst dramatic mountain landscapes and narrow winding streets dotted with traditional stone houses. Our hotel for the next three nights is idyllically nestled in the center of the village, with lush gardens and expansive mountain views.

Hiking in the Ospedale
Today we travel further inland into the heart of Corsica, to the Ospédale region. Here, we climb Punta di a Vacca Morta, another summit offering an exceptional panorama. With the sea to the east and west, Sardinia to the south, and the Alta Rocca valley at your feet, framed by the Aiguilles de Bavella we are truly at the apex of Corsica’s interior. Several trails of various loops offer many hiking options.
This evening is free to explore the Zonza’s village and enjoy dinner on your own in on of the local restaurants.
Aiguilles de Bavella and Paliri Refuge
Today, we venture deeper into the Bavella region and its famous Aiguilles (“needles”). Starting at the dramatic mountain pass, “Col de Bavella”, we hike on a section of the renowned long distance route, the GR20, to reach the refuge of Paliri for lunch. Here, we'll soak in the extensive mountain views, highlighting why Corsica is known as a “mountain in the sea”. If time and energy allow, we may hike further into the Bavella Needles, where you may catch a glimpse of a team of rock climbers. If more suitable for our group, several alternative less strenuous hikes are available. We return on the same route back to the Col de Bavella, where we take in the views before heading back to our haven in Zonza.
Punta Cuciurpula Hiking
This morning we transfer to the charming village of Serra di Scopamena to hike the intriguing Punta Cuciurpula. An ascent to the summit offers breathtaking views of the Rizzanese valley, Aiguilles de Bavella, and the Gulf of Valinco. Here, we discover the history of Lord Rinucciu Della Rocca and his castle. The descent to the village winds through impressive granite boulders, once inhabited, in a forest of green oaks, beautiful as it is mysterious.
After our hike, we settle into the next quintessential seaside Corsican town of Sartène. Sartène is built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Valinco Gulf, offering an exceptional panorama extending to the Bavella Needles. This town is rich with art and history, as we witness wandering through the narrow quaint alleys of the old town and medieval quarter. Sites such as Liberation Square, Sainte Marie Church, and the watchtower, the last remnant of the city’s 15th-century fortifications, are prominent sites. This evening is free to choose a dinner locale, at one of Sartene’s authentic Corsican restaurants.
Hotel San DamianuSartene, France
Located on the heights of the Gulf of Valinco, Hotel San Damianu sits at 1000 feet, yet only five miles from the seaside. It’s a balcony suspended between the sea and mountains, with extraorinary views of the Gulf of Valinco, the Rizzanese valley, the old town of Sartène and on the needles of Bavella and Incudine.
Campomoro - Monte San Petru
Today, we drive west to the region of Sartene, with superb views over the west coast, one of Corsica’s most beautiful coastlines. We enter a magnificent conservatory of natural Mediterranean landscapes and habitats. The site of Campomoro offers several options—a beautiful hike between the sea, the maquis and fantastically shaped rock formations. We may also opt to hike up Monte San Petru, at the gates of the Alta Rocca. From the summit, a magnificent panoramic view stretches from the Gulf of Valinco to the Gulf of Ajaccio. This evening, we’ll enjoy farewell dinner at a favorite local restaurant in Sartene’s medieval village.
Departure - Ajaccio
This morning, we'll bid adieu to the mountains of Corsica, and will transfer to the Ajaccio airport for departures. Those who opt to extend their trip may enjoy an extra night or two in this coastal city.
