Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is a profound journey through some of the most varied landscapes on earth, and with Boundless Journeys, you’ll have the choice between two thoughtfully designed routes—Lemosho and Marangu—each offering a distinct perspective on the mountain. Your adventure begins with time to prepare alongside our experienced guides, ensuring you’re fully equipped and confident before setting out. From your first steps in the lush rainforest, where filtered light and birdsong surround you, the trail gradually reveals Kilimanjaro’s remarkable diversity—opening into sweeping moorlands, stark alpine desert, and ultimately the glaciated summit zone. Each day brings a steady rhythm of hiking, rest, and acclimatization, allowing you to fully absorb the landscape while preparing for the ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Arrival Day
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you'll meet your guides and transfer to your hotel for a light bite to eat and a good nights rest.
The Miradadi HotelMoshi, Tanzania
A comfortable and tranquil retreat nestled in the lush foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, away from the hustle and bustle of town. A great place to prepare or unwind for both climbers and safari goers.
Preparing for the hike
Today is set aside to prepare for your hike of Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll meet your guides for a pre-trek briefing to review the route, discuss safety procedures, and go over what to expect during the days ahead on the mountain.
You’ll also have time to organize your day pack and duffel, check your gear, and make any final preparations. The rest of the day is free to relax and get a good night’s rest before your Kilimanjaro adventure begins.
Beginning the Trek
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, where entry formalities are completed before continuing on to the Lemosho trailhead. After a relaxed lunch, you'll take your first steps on the mountain, hiking through lush, untouched rainforest. Towering trees, hanging moss, and the sounds of birds and monkeys surround you as you ease into the trek. It's a gentle introduction to the days ahead, ending at your first camp deep in the forest.
Forest CampKilimanjaro, Tanzania
Nestled beneath a dense rainforest canopy, Forest Camp offers a peaceful beginning to your Kilimanjaro adventure. The cool mountain air, vibrant vegetation, and occasional sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys create a truly unforgettable first night on the trail.
Transition to Moorland
As you leave the dense forest behind, the landscape begins to open up into rolling moorland. The trail winds through tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock, with sweeping views beginning to emerge. You’ll cross small streams and gradually ascend to the Shira Plateau, where your first clear views of Kibo—the summit cone of the mountain—come into focus. Camp tonight is set on the plateau, with wide-open skies and a real sense of being on the mountain.
Shira Camp 1Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
The trail climbs out of the rainforest and onto the sweeping Shira Plateau, where open moorlands, giant lobelias, and panoramic mountain views replace the dense forest below. With Kibo Peak now rising prominently ahead, you’ll enjoy your first true experience of Kilimanjaro’s alpine environment.
Exploring the Shira Plateau
Today is designed with acclimatization in mind as you spend the day exploring the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The walking is steady and gradual, offering incredible views across the open landscape toward Kibo's glaciered peak. After passing Shira 2 Camp, you'll continue on to the quieter Moir Hut area, tucked beneath the Lent Hills. There's often time for a short acclimatization hike here, helping your body adjust while taking in even more of the surrounding scenery.
Moir HutKilimanjaro, Tanzania
Tucked beneath the rugged slopes of Lent Hills, Moir Hut Camp offers a peaceful night in Kilimanjaro’s alpine wilderness. Surrounded by sweeping mountain views and unique high-altitude landscapes, it’s an ideal place to acclimatize before continuing toward the summit.
Climb High, Sleep Low
Today is a key acclimatization day. You'll climb steadily toward the dramatic Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation known as the “Shark's Tooth.” Reaching higher elevation before descending helps your body adapt to the altitude. After taking in the views, the trail drops into the beautiful Barranco Valley, where giant senecio plants dot the landscape. Camp is set beneath the towering Barranco Wall, one of the most iconic features of the trek.
Barranco CampKilimanjaro, Tanzania
Surrounded by towering giant groundsels and the dramatic cliffs of the Barranco Wall, Barranco Camp is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic campsites. Framed by sweeping views of Kibo’s glaciers and the rugged alpine landscape, it’s the perfect place to relax after an important acclimatization day and reflect on the journey ahead.
The Barranco Wall
After breakfast, you'll tackle the Barranco Wall—a fun and rewarding scramble that's often a highlight of the climb. Though it looks imposing from below, your guides will lead you safely to the top, where you're rewarded with incredible views back across the valley. From here, the trail winds through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. It's a shorter day, giving you valuable time to rest, hydrate, and continue acclimatizing.
Karanga CampKilimanjaro, Tanzania
Following the exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, today's shorter trek winds through Kilimanjaro's rugged alpine landscape to Karanga Camp. Surrounded by expansive mountain vistas and towering glaciers, this peaceful campsite provides valuable time to acclimatize and recharge before continuing your ascent toward Barafu Camp and the summit.
High Camp Preparation
A steady climb brings you into the stark alpine desert of Barafu Camp. The terrain is rugged and exposed, with sweeping views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. By now, you’ve completed the southern circuit of the mountain, seeing it from multiple perspectives. After an early dinner, you’ll organize your gear and get some rest—summit night begins before midnight.
Barafu CampKilimanjaro, Tanzania
Set along a rocky ridge high above the surrounding landscape, Barafu Camp is a dramatic and unforgettable campsite on Kilimanjaro. With its remote alpine setting, panoramic views, and proximity to the summit trail, it serves as the launching point for the final climb. After settling in, you’ll have time to rest, organize your gear, and take in the incredible surroundings before beginning your midnight ascent toward the roof of Africa.
Summit Day
Summit day begins in the quiet hours of the night, hiking by headlamp under a sky filled with stars. The ascent is slow and steady as you make your way up a steep scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. As dawn approaches, the horizon begins to glow—an unforgettable moment on the mountain. From Stella Point, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll begin your descent, stopping at Barafu for a rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Mweka CampKilimanjaro, Tanzania
Mweka Camp is your final camp after summiting Kilimanjaro’s Lemosho route. Nestled in the ferns, it provides oxygen-rich air, a warm sense of camaraderie, and a peaceful refuge after conquering the rooftop of Africa.
Last day on the mountain
Your final morning on the mountain begins with a descent through lush rainforest, a striking contrast to the alpine terrain above. The trail can be damp and muddy, but the air is rich with oxygen and the sounds of the forest return. At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate—a well-earned reward for your journey. From here, you say farewell to the team who helped you along the way and transfer to Moshi, where a hot shower, comfortable bed, and time to celebrate await.
Departure Day
After a slow morning, head to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for homeward-bound flights or extend your time in Tanzania on one of our wonderful safari add on options.

Summit day is the most demanding—with a long, slow, pre-dawn ascent—but the support of experienced guides and the entire journey as you reach the “Roof of Africa” make the effort truly unforgettable. Boundless Journeys rates this hike at a 4+ or 5.

Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro vary dramatically with both altitude and time of day. At the base, daytime conditions are often comfortable, ranging from 70-80°F (21-27°C), but as you ascend, the air becomes much colder. Above 12,000 feet (3,658 meters), nighttime temperatures frequently fall below freezing, and at the summit, they can drop to between 20°F (-7°C) and -10°F (-23°C), with wind chill making it feel even colder.
On a single climb, you can experience nearly every season—warm and humid in the rainforest, crisp and dry in the alpine desert, and icy at the summit. Layered clothing is essential, allowing you to adapt to the rapid changes in temperature as you move up the mountain.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro is both challenging and unforgettable. Hike through lush rainforest, alpine deserts, and mossy highlands while your guides set a slow but steady pace. At camp, rest, enjoy hearty meals, play cards or take short walks to scenic viewpoints. Evenings bring quiet reflection, stunning sunsets, and brilliant starlit skies. It's a journey that tests your endurance, rewards your effort, and offers a rare connection to one of the world's most iconic mountains.
January to March (dry and quiet)
The weather in the first few months after the short rainy season is generally warm and dry. Away from the high season and relatively quiet, this is one of our favorite times to climb Kilimanjaro.
April and May (long rainy season)
The long rainy season in Tanzania normally occurs in April and May although it has become more unpredictable in recent years. If you don't mind the rain you can have the mountain pretty much to yourself.
June to early November (dry but busy)
June to early November are the driest months for your Kilimanjaro climb and, particularly during August to October, the mountain is very busy. The shoulder months of June and July and early November are good compromises if a little rain doesn't deter you.
November to mid-December (short rainy season)
The short rainy season normally starts towards the back end of November and continues for 3-4 weeks. Generally, rain is less persistent than during the rainy months of April and May so this is a good time to be on the mountain without the crowds.
